Who We Are

BCIL is a 501(c)(3) organization that has provided services to people with disabilities since 1974, when it became the second independent living center in the country. The organization was created by people with disabilities seeking full integration into society. BCIL accomplishes this by empowering people of all ages with a wide range of disabilities with the practical skills and self-confidence to take control over their lives and become active members of the communities in which they live. At the same time, BCIL engages in advocacy and community organizing to promote access and change within society.

Learn More About Us

Services

BCIL provides a vast range of crucial services for individuals with disabilities that support them in gaining power and control over their lives, setting them on a path to achieve their goals and aspirations.

Direct Services

Empowering a person means to assist an individual to take control of his or her life in all areas, regardless of what his or her disability may be. Through BCIL’s Direct Services department, we work with individuals to help them develop, set, and achieve their personal goals.

Youth Services

As a Center for Independent Living, BCIL provides its five core services to people of all ages, including those under 22. Services are aimed at empowering young people to make a smooth transition from youth to adult services.

Community Living

Being independent doesn’t have to mean going it alone. Our Community Living and Participation department can help you plan how to live in the setting of your choice, with the supports you need, to go about life on your own terms.

Personal Care Attendant Program

PCA services are a MassHealth program that assists people with permanent or chronic disabilities to live at home independently. This is a consumer directed program, which provides personal care services for people with disabilities.

Advocacy

BCIL believes that greater independence for people with disabilities is a key social justice issue and that people with disabilities must unite to speak out on larger issues that affect our lives such as housing, healthcare, and transportation access.

Our Successes Include

Improving access to the MBTA

Protecting the Personal Care Attendant program and supporting affordable healthcare

Promoting municipal access

Increasing affordable, accessible housing
